The
blueheronteanook is a fanfic community for Otherverse. It is separate from the Ao3 ecosystem because I wanted it to collect and encourage a certain type of content in a way that is infeasible to do on Ao3. Namely, more meta essays, more discussions, more canon character focus. Additionally,
the organization behind Ao3 has been a dumpster fire lately and I want to have other baskets made to hold eggs in case this one breaks.
Dreamwidth was chosen as a platform because it is semi-familiar, is good at holding long pieces of text, and can take submissions from anyone with an account. It is better at communitybuilding, if people can be persuaded to come. It also has some downsides. Compared to Ao3, Dreamwidth is less user friendly, with worse tagging, discoverability, and ability to easily navigate multichapter works. Hopefully, that can be mitigated with some changes to the Tea Nook on the technical side.
Things that need to happen:
- Recruiting an admin/moderation team that is bigger than just me. It's about the size where that is now appropriate.
- When Pale finishes, run a fic event as a way to drum up interest in the site
Nice to haves:
- Finding some way to migrate the info in the pinned post, navigation links, intro, and all, out of the pin so that there can be more space to pin things for announcements. Possibly changing the header navigation to have dividers for fic, meta, events, and open threads. See here.
- Making entry headers show some indication that they can be interacted with when hovered over. Color change or underline with CSS?
- Possible change to the tag page to make it easier to look at tags without scrolling through a wall of character names that will only grow larger and larger
- Possible change to the tag page so it includes static text about how to search with more than one tag at once
